Relationship Between Seniors & Pets

Grad Student Sees Relationship Between Seniors & Pets Through Camera Lens

Seniors and Pets Carlton Plaza DavisAndria Hautamaki, a 29-year-old University of California, Davis graduate student used a photography class assignment as an opportunity to look through the lens of a camera at the relationship between seniors and their pets.  To do so, Hautamaki met with Rob Read, executive director of Carlton Plaza of Davis, to plan a series of four photos of residents of the community with their pets, or “fun little friends,” as she calls them.

Several forms of therapy, including animal-assisted therapy and other animal-assisted activities, are based on the principle that animals can help people open up, feel more comfortable and generally live healthier.  That’s a principle Hautamaki  noticed when she looked at the relationship she has with her own dog, Mitón, a three-year-old border collie mix she brought back with her from Chile, where she lived and worked guiding trail rides and horse packing trips from 2011 to 2013.

Hautamaki spent some of her time in Chile making photos of the ranchers or baqueanos – “knowers of places” – as well as the natural backdrop provided by the Chilean wilderness.  She used her photography to investigate and take a closer look at the issues facing the southernmost region of Chile, the “end of the world” as many call it.  Documenting the lives of the southern Chilean ranchers, Hautamaki’s photos give insight into the lives of those who call the rugged landscape home.

“Being a student, the dog is good for getting me outside, going for runs,” said Hautamaki of her relationship with Mitón, which she said is beneficial to her well-being and one of the things that keeps her physically and mentally healthy.

Hautamaki, a Colorado native, is studying International Agricultural Development at UC Davis with the intent to use documentary photography to educate people on agricultural issues.  As part of that graduate program, she is taking a photo essay class from Ken Light, an adjunct professor at the UC Berkeley School of Journalism.

Hautamaki used an assignment from her that class as an opportunity to investigate the relationships people from different age groups have with their pets, specifically the relationships between seniors and their pets.

She made photos of the residents of Carlton Plaza of Davis – a local senior living community – with their pets, capturing the essence of the relationship and show the context of the environment in which the relationship takes place.  Getting the environmental context while shooting indoors, she says, was the biggest challenge she encountered during the photo shoot.
“It’s sometimes hard for people to open up about themselves, but when they’re talking about their family, their friends or their pets, it gets them talking a lot easier,” she said.

Hautamaki spent as much time as needed with each with four residents and their pets to capture the special nature of the relationship between the person and animal.

“It was great having Andria photograph the residents and their pets,” said Rob Read, executive director of the community. “The residents really opened up to her and enjoyed sharing their love of their pets.”  The photos were made over the course of two days using a Canon EOS 7D digital single-lens reflex camera with a portrait lens and no flash.

Carlton Plaza of Davis offers senior independent living; assisted living for those who need a little more help with day-to-day activities; and memory care for seniors challenged by Alzheimer’s, dementia and other forms of memory loss.  The community features an award-winning diabetes management program, short term respite care and on-staff nursing.

Carlton Plaza of Davis Celebrates One-Year Anniversary of Caring for Seniors

Carlton Plaza Davis 1 Year AnniversaryResidents and the staff at Carlton Plaza of Davis are celebrating the one-year anniversary of the 120-apartment senior living community. The community includes independent living, assisted living and memory care, with special programs for diabetes management and meals created by a Culinary Institute of America-trained chef.

In addition to a full schedule of daily events and activities, Carlton Plaza of Davis hosts many special events each month with guest speakers, live music, gourmet food tastings and more. The events, usually free and open to the public, give residents the opportunity to participate in and enjoy engaging activities in the comfort of their own community.

“We’ve had a great year caring for the seniors in this community,” said Rob Read, executive director of Carlton Plaza of Davis, who was raised locally. “I’m incredibly grateful that I get to serve seniors in the city where I grew up and watch them enjoy their time at our community.”

The restaurant-style dining available at Carlton Plaza of Davis has been a point of pride for Read. The kitchen staff at the community is led by chef Andrew Moret. In addition to the Culinary Institute of America, Moret attended the Sichuan Higher Institute of Cuisine in China and Ideas in Food in San Francisco. He leads the kitchen in creating high-quality meals for the residents every day, as well as special appetizers, entrees and full meals for many of the special events held at the community.

Read and Moret have been honored at the Woodland Chamber of Commerce Chili Cook-Off for their elk, bison and rabbit chilis; winning first place in the blind tasting green chili category.

The one-year anniversary is being celebrated with special savings for new residents, including professional movers for local moves, a reduced community fee and a two-year rent rate lock.

NEW CARLTON SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY APPROVED FOR BUILDING IN DAVIS, CA.
Council passes new labor contract
By JANE TEIXEIRA

In a unanimous decision, the council gave its final approval for the construction of the Carlton Plaza Senior Living Community on Fifth Street. Construction is due to begin in September and will last about 14 months. The plaza will be built on 2.5 acres and contain 103 assisted care units, housing up to 127 people. Carlton Senior Living, established in 1984, currently has assisted care facilities in six locations.  It will also begin construction on an assisted care facility in Elk Grove this fall. “It’s not only a great project, it’s also a great fit in a town with senior housing needs,” Souza said. “Assisted living is one of the major deficits in our community and it needed to be filled.” Senior VP of CSL, Toni Graham, said  “Nothing is more important than providing care to our senior residents in a courteous, helpful and prompt way”. “We pride ourselves on being a leader in the assisted living industry.” American Diabetes Association Associate Manager Mark Orgeron partnered with the Sacramento branch of  CSL for one year. “It’s been absolutely awesome,”  Orgeron said. “They’re a great company and they’re very dedicated to helping people with diabetes. Senior citizens in Davis will have a positive experience with them.”
