If you are worried about falls, there are a few different ways that you can ensure that you reduce fall chances in seniors. Given how dangerous a fall can be for seniors, these tips should be taken into serious consideration:

Tip #1 – Create clear walking paths

You want to make sure that our loved one has a chance to walk around without issue. Make sure that there is space to walk freely by removing everyday clutter and moving small furniture out of the way. Things such as throw rugs, phone cords, small décor items, pet bowls, and bags can all cause a fall to occur.

Tip #2 – Use Non-Slip Items In The Bathroom

Because most senior falls occur in the bathroom, this is one area where you should focus your attention. Make sure that you have a rubber mat in the shower or bathtub. This is going to provide seniors with some added grip that ensures that they are less likely to fall.

Tip #3 – Avoid Wet Floors

A leaking faucet, dripping pet water dish and wet weather all create fall hazards.Slippery floors are especially hazardous because they can be hard to spot. To reduce fall risk, make sure to avoid slippery surfaces by using non-skid wax on waxed floors and select footwear with non-slip soles, whenever possible.

Tip #4 – Keep The House Well Lit

If you want to avoid falls in seniors, keeping the home well-lit is one of the best ways to do so. It is important to ensure that the living space has enough light, because eyesight diminishes with age. Make sure that you have enough lighting on outdoor walkaways, on the stairs, and each room. You want to make sure that you use light bulbs that are the highest wattage recommended for that particular fixture.

Tip #5 – Keep Up A Regular Health And Exercise Regime

Seniors should take preventative measures to ensure that they are able to stay active and remain flexible. Even though this is not an immediate prevention measure, it certainly helps to improve overall health, coordination, and balance. Especially upper-body strength is important to help prevent falls.

Tip #6 – Use Handrails

One of the most dangerous places in the home for seniors are stairs. Seniors will want to avoid carrying items up and down the stairs with both hands and make sure to use the handrails. This is going to help them keep their balance by providing adequate support.
