Resident Spotlight – Nina Powell

Meet Carlton Senior Living’s spotlight resident, Nina Powell – Nina was born Nina Lee Kingsley on September 24th, 1930 in Pontiac, Michigan near the city of Detroit. When Nina was about 10 years old, her family moved across the country and settled in San Francisco, California. On January 1st, 1948, at the age of 17, Nina married Jim Powell and the couple happily started their lives together. Eventually, the couple would welcome three children into the family. Nina worked for Pacific Telephone Company, later known as Pacific Bell, and later became a draftsman creating detailed technical plans and drawing for telephone pole layouts. Nina and Jim celebrated 67 years of marriage prior to his passing in 2015.

Nina currently has two living children and one grandson that Jim and she adopted after the untimely passing of their daughter. Nina is the proud grandmother to five grandchildren. Out of all of the places she has visited, Nina says Canada is her favorite because of the climate and beautiful sites to see. Her favorite hobby was once reading but since her eyesight is diminishing, she now finds pleasure in listening to the San Francisco Giants games as well as mystery shows on television.

People might be surprised to learn how sassy and talkative she is but Nina’s motto is to, “always surround yourself with talkative people” and so she makes it a point to do so. Nina has a wonderful sense of humor and when she was asked to choose three words to describe herself, she selected talkative, short and funny. When asked what advice she would give to new residents, she stated quite simply to “make friends.” What she likes best about the Carlton Senior Living Elk Grove community is the fact that she no longer has to cook and she also loves the people.
