Who is Teepa Snow?

Teepa is a renowned dementia care expert, having dedicated her 40-plus-year career to improving the lives of people living with dementia and those who care for them. Her expertise combines her personal experience as a care partner, her work as an occupational therapist, and her various roles in the senior living space, including the Alzheimer’s Association. Teepa’s internationally recognized dementia training method, Positive Approach to Care®, has become the gold standard in dementia care.

What is Positive Approach to Care® (PAC)?

Positive Approach to Care® focuses on building positive relationships, fostering a sense of well-being, and providing person-centered care based on the unique needs and abilities of the person living with dementia. Teepa has earned numerous awards for her approach, including the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers.

Carlton University Instructors: PAC Certified Trainers

Since 2016, Carlton University Instructors have provided hands-on training for all Carlton employees. Now, as Certified PAC Trainers, they have enhanced their teaching methods using Teepa Snow’s language, materials, and techniques. All Carlton employees will receive training on:

  • Teepa Snow’s GEMS®
  • Positive Physical Approach™
  • Hand-under-Hand®
  • Typical versus atypical aging

As Certified PAC Trainers, Carlton University Instructors are committed to developing compassionate and effective Care Partners, ensuring the best support for our residents living with dementia.

Carlton’s Memory Care Managers: PAC Certified Coaches

Each manager in Carlton’s Memory Care Neighborhoods is a PAC Certified Coach, empowering them to mentor Care Partners in supporting individuals living with brain change. As PAC Certified Coaches, our managers:

  • Bring training from the classroom directly to the floor, offering in-the-moment coaching and guidance
  • Demonstrate PAC Skills with empathy
  • Assess progress
  • Ensure the consistent application of PAC Skills

Memory Care Activities: PAC Engagement Leader

Each Carlton Memory Care has a dedicated Activity Manager and assistant responsible for creating moments of joy and engagement for residents living with brain change.

These moments are built on individual relationships, knowing each resident’s life story, current GEMS® state, and using Positive Physical Approach™.

Sherrilynn Geban, a certified PAC Engagement Leader, oversees the entire activity program, incorporating Teepa Snow’s engagement techniques as its foundation.
